COLLECTOR SUMMARY

What This Is

A Seiko SUS SCFW007, built around the 5M42 kinetic caliber and presented in a steel case with a blue sunburst dial and matching bracelet.

Why It Matters

The SUS line holds a special place in Seiko collecting because it mixed youth-oriented design with real case quality, robust construction and more interesting movement choices than most entry-level 1990s Seikos.

What Stands Out

The all-steel case, blue sunburst dial, kinetic movement and deliberately assertive SUS styling give this watch a very different feel from Seiko's more conservative lines of the period.

Why This One

For collectors looking for a less obvious but well-loved Seiko enthusiast piece, this is a strong SUS example with the right bracelet, proportions and late-1990s character intact.

BUYING QUESTIONS

Is the watch original?

Originality is described as carefully and directly as possible based on what can be observed and verified. Where parts are believed to be original, replaced or uncertain, that should be stated in the listing.

Has it been serviced?

Service status is only represented as stated in the listing. If a watch was serviced or checked, that should be mentioned explicitly rather than assumed.

How accurate is it?

Timing performance can vary by age, movement type and service history. Any measured rate or performance note should be understood as an observation at the time of listing, not a lifetime guarantee.

Why is it so expensive?

Price reflects a mix of rarity, condition, originality, reference desirability and the time spent sourcing, researching and presenting the watch accurately. Some vintage Seiko references are simply much harder to find in honest condition than others.

If you want more detail before buying, additional photos and clarification can be requested.

COLLECTOR NOTES

The SUS watch is a fan favorite in the Seiko watch community. Some will know about the GMT complication that the 4S caliber offers, some know about the quartz SUS.

This attractive kinetic or AGS "student edition" SUS was a rechargeable quartz aimed at the young watch nerd (18 to 22 year old) - here the Simple and Strong of SUS actually could best be interpreted to mean a Steel and Sturdy case that would just not sit modestly on the wrist, even though the U referred to the (rather bookish) mathematical symbol for unity..

Introduced in 1997 with the caliber 5M42, this model was only produced until the end of 1998, specifically as a watch being simple yet assertive and all metal, it would not fall apart under some abuse. Of course all SUS models are 10bar waterproof.

Design wise Seiko lay focus on textures - on the dial and the finishing of the case. This was a watch for the student with his own lifestyle. The brochures claimed that the watch was to enable the wearer to know all aspects of time...

The 4S12 civilian models (JPY 38,000) and the student's kinetic SUS (JPY 32.000) were more expensive than the military 4S15 models (JPY 30,000) and more flashy for sure, they came in four color options, the orsange SCFW003, the black SCFF009, the black SCFW001 and the grey sunburst SCFW005. All have Seiko's hardlex fitted and all are lumed with Lumibrite but interestingly the application of it can be uneven, one may surmise that even in the nineties not everything in the Seiko factory had been automated.
