BUYING QUESTIONS
BUYING QUESTIONS
Originality is described as carefully and directly as possible based on what can be observed and verified. Where parts are believed to be original, replaced or uncertain, that should be stated in the listing.
Service status is only represented as stated in the listing. If a watch was serviced or checked, that should be mentioned explicitly rather than assumed.
Timing performance can vary by age, movement type and service history. Any measured rate or performance note should be understood as an observation at the time of listing, not a lifetime guarantee.
Price reflects rarity, condition, originality and sourcing effort. In this case, the listing is currently marked down from €495 to €325, which places it as a relatively accessible entry into rarer Seiko 5 DX references.
If you want more detail before buying, additional photos and clarification can be requested.

Seiko 5 DX: Late-Sixties Deluxe Daily Wear
The Seiko 5 DX 5139 automatic caliber is a rarely seen watch, produced in the sixties just before the magic lever era. "DX" stands for Deluxe and reflected the more luxurious character of this line, even while remaining relatively affordable.
Many DX models offered design touches usually seen on more expensive watches of the period, including textured or iridescent dials and applied markers. Styling across the series ranged from conservative to quite extreme.
Position in the Seiko 5 Family
Some DX models were also sold as regular Seiko 5 variants without DX markings. Over time, Seiko kept recognizable case design language while changing movement families and jewel counts, including 6106, 70xx and 76xx streams.
Notably, these were not entry-level watches in practical terms: design execution, movement quality and features such as hacking behavior put them above many standard Seiko 5 counterparts.
Operating Quirks and Character
This reference has the characteristic operating behavior that collectors remember:
- Quickset date by pressing the crown
- Quickset day by pulling and turning the crown
- Winding through gentle wrist motion rather than regular crown winding
The recessed crown design follows that logic, because it was intended to be used differently from a conventional hand-wind-first routine.
Why This One Matters
More than fifty years on, this 51-5D still delivers the core appeal: strong everyday wearability, mechanical personality and a distinctly modern Seiko design language for its era.
With correct 5139A-7020 identifiers, 27-jewel caliber, original bracelet coding and excellent listed condition, it represents a solid example of the Seiko 5 DX line in honest collector terms.
